How can we help?
Getting started
How do I open an account?
Choose an account type, complete the application with your personal, employment and suitability details, then set a password. It takes about ten minutes and there is no minimum to open. You can fund it immediately or later.
What do I need to apply?
Your legal name, date of birth, address, Social Security number and employment details. To fund by ACH you also need your bank routing and account numbers. We never ask for any of it by email.
Can I open more than one account?
Yes. Most clients hold several - for example a Roth IRA, a brokerage account and a cash management account. Open additional accounts from your dashboard in a couple of clicks.
Is there a minimum balance?
No. There is no minimum to open or maintain any account type, and most MeridianClad funds have no minimum investment.
Money movement
How do I deposit money?
From the dashboard choose Move money, select the destination account and enter an amount. ACH transfers from a linked bank are free and typically settle in one to three business days.
How long do withdrawals take?
ACH withdrawals to a linked bank usually arrive in one to three business days. Wires go same-day for a $15 fee. Proceeds from a sale are available once the trade settles, generally the next business day.
Can I transfer between my own accounts?
Yes, and internal transfers are instant. Note that moving money into an IRA counts as a contribution against the annual limit.
How do I move an account from another firm?
Open the matching MeridianClad account, then submit a transfer request with a recent statement from the other firm. Most transfers complete in five to ten business days and we do not charge for them.
Trading
What does a trade cost?
Online U.S. stock and ETF trades are $0. MeridianClad mutual funds carry no transaction fee. Options are $0 plus $0.65 per contract, and a broker-assisted trade is $25.
When does a trade settle?
Stocks and ETFs settle the next business day (T+1). Mutual funds price once a day at the close and settle the following business day. Proceeds are available to trade again immediately, and to withdraw after settlement.
Can I buy fractional shares?
Yes, from $1. Dollar-based orders let you invest a specific amount rather than a share count, and fractional positions still receive their share of dividends.
What order types do you support?
Market, limit, stop and stop-limit orders, with day or good-till-cancelled duration. Market orders fill immediately at the best available price.
Retirement
How much can I contribute to an IRA?
$7,000 for 2025, plus a $1,000 catch-up from age 50. That limit is shared across all your traditional and Roth IRAs combined.
Should I choose a Roth or a traditional IRA?
It depends on whether your tax rate is higher now or in retirement. Higher later favours the Roth; higher now favours the traditional deduction. Many households hold both to hedge.
When must I take money out?
Required minimum distributions begin at 73 for traditional, rollover, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs and most workplace plans. Roth IRAs have no RMD during the original owner's lifetime.
How do I roll over an old 401(k)?
Open a Rollover IRA, then request a direct rollover from the old plan administrator. A direct rollover is not taxable and nothing is withheld. Most complete within five to fifteen business days.
Taxes & documents
Which tax forms will I receive?
Form 1099-DIV for dividends, 1099-B for sales in taxable accounts, 1099-R for retirement distributions, and Form 5498 for IRA contributions. All appear under Documents when available.
Where are my statements?
Monthly statements and trade confirmations are in the Documents section of your dashboard, kept for seven years. Electronic delivery is free; paper statements cost $2 each.
What is tax-loss harvesting?
Selling a position at a loss to offset gains and up to $3,000 of ordinary income per year. It applies only in taxable accounts, and the wash-sale rule disallows the loss if you buy a substantially identical security within 30 days either side.
Security
How is my account protected?
SIPC protection covers up to $500,000 in securities, including $250,000 for cash, in the event of broker failure. It does not protect against market losses.
What if someone accesses my account?
Report it immediately and you carry $0 liability for unauthorised activity. Enable two-factor authentication in Profile and security to reduce the risk substantially.
How should I keep my login safe?
Use a unique password that you do not reuse anywhere else, turn on two-factor authentication, and never share a one-time code with anyone who calls you - we will never ask for it.
