Our approach

This site is built to be usable with a keyboard alone, with assistive technology, and at increased text sizes. It targets the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 at level AA as a design goal.

What is implemented

  • Semantic HTML landmarks, headings in order, and labelled form controls throughout.
  • Visible focus styles on every interactive element, and dropdown menus that open with the keyboard and close on Escape.
  • Colour contrast tested against WCAG AA for body text and interface components.
  • Layouts that reflow to a single column without horizontal scrolling down to 320 pixels wide.
  • Data conveyed by colour - gains and losses - always carries a sign or a label as well.
  • Charts are decorative summaries of data that is also available in adjacent tables.

Known limitations

The live-updating calculator sliders announce their values through the associated label, but do not currently emit ARIA live-region updates as results change.
