Planning

A plan is just arithmetic you have written down

Every tool below is free, needs no account, and shows its assumptions. Start with the number you need, then work backwards to what you save each month.

A framework

The order that usually works

Not a rule, but a sequence that puts each dollar where it earns the most - starting with the guaranteed returns.

1

Capture the full employer match

A 50% match is an immediate 50% return, and there is nothing else in finance that pays that reliably. Check yours.

2

Clear high-interest debt

Paying off a 22% credit card is a guaranteed 22% return. No portfolio can promise that.

3

Build three to six months of expenses

Held somewhere liquid that still pays - a government money market fund currently yields around 4.85%.

4

Max the tax-advantaged accounts

IRA, then the rest of the 401(k), then an HSA if you are eligible - the HSA is the only triple-tax-advantaged account.

5

Invest the surplus in a brokerage account

No limits and no withdrawal rules. Favour tax-efficient index funds and ETFs here.

6

Review once a year, not once a week

Rebalance when an asset class drifts more than five points from target. Otherwise leave it alone.

Inside your account

Goals that track themselves

Once you have an account, the planning tools stop being hypothetical. Set a goal, link it to a target date, and your dashboard shows the funded percentage updating with the market.

  • Retirement readiness score across every account
  • Goal progress bars with required monthly contributions
  • Allocation drift alerts against your target mix
  • A year-by-year retirement income projection

Sample goal tracking

Retire at 65 $412,000 of $1,800,000 · 23%
College fund $34,500 of $180,000 · 19%
Emergency reserve $18,640 of $45,000 · 41%
Lake house deposit $26,000 of $120,000 · 22%
