Planning

Know your number, then watch it get closer

Most people can tell you what they earn. Very few can tell you what they will need. Our planning tools translate a savings rate into a retirement income - and tell you plainly whether it is enough.

1

Answer six questions

Age, income, current savings, target retirement age, risk tolerance and expected spending.

2

See the projection

A year-by-year balance, the income it supports at a 4% withdrawal rate, and the gap if one exists.

3

Close the gap

Adjust contributions, retirement age or allocation and watch the projection move in real time.

Roth or traditional? A decision that turns on one variable

Strip away the complexity and the choice is mostly a bet on your tax rate now versus your tax rate later.

Common questions

Before you open an account

How much do I need to start?
Nothing. There is no minimum to open a brokerage or retirement account, and most of our index funds have no minimum investment. Fractional shares let you invest any dollar amount from $1.
What does it cost?
Online stock and ETF trades are $0. There is no account maintenance fee, no inactivity fee and no fee to transfer out. Funds charge their own expense ratio, from 0.02% to 0.25% a year - see the full pricing page.
Should I choose a Roth or a traditional IRA?
It mostly turns on whether your tax rate is higher now or in retirement. Higher later favours the Roth; higher now favours the traditional deduction. Our Roth versus traditional guide works through the arithmetic.
How long does a 401(k) rollover take?
Opening the Rollover IRA takes about ten minutes. Moving the assets depends on your old plan administrator - typically five to fifteen business days for a direct rollover.
Is my money protected?
Accounts carry SIPC protection up to $500,000, including a $250,000 limit for cash. SIPC protects against broker failure, not against market losses.
